Diong is a Latin alphabet variable font with a distinctive width system. Unlike traditional fonts composed of uniformly spaced characters, Diong creates a diverse texture within a single font by featuring contrasting groups of characters.
In the process, I used the skeleton of the Delispace font to create variations such as condensed, extended, light, bold, etc. While doing this, I found out that elongating curves like lowercase d, c, e making some interesting textures.
I started with the regular style and made certain groups of characters narrower (condensed) and others wider (extended). This created a visually striking rhythm.

Following a skeleton from my previous font ‘delispice,’ motive from Korean indie rockbands from 1990s.

I had a fun idea of how wide I could make the characters before they started causing errors. I ended up creating a super-extended version that was pushed to the brink of errors within Glyphs. To showcase it effectively, I organized an exhibition where audiences could print the super-extended characters using a receipt printer.

Concerned about legibility of Super extended version. To solve this problem, designed a boundary system using parenthesis inspired by Ancient Egypt’s Cartouche.
